That Time I Got Reincarnated As a Slime ISEKAI Chronicles – Review

That Time I Got Reincarnated As a Slime ISEKAI Chronicles is a side-scrolling action RPG developed by Bandai Namco. The game is based on the hit anime series and has been released for the consoles. After successfully playing the game, I found that it is good but has some issues that must be addressed.

This game is based on the hit anime starting from the very beginning of the show with some original story content added in for fun. It had a ton of good story arcs and funny content like eating Shion’s cooking, the A.I. giving funny tips to Rimuru to survive his harem, and many more. It is also easily worth watching how the flow of the game will proceed.

The way they portrayed the characters is so perfect that it deserves recognition. From iconic scenes featuring the arrival of Rimuru to Benimaru and his fellow ogres‘ arrival at Jurai Forest, all of these characters have been portrayed in their truest sense in both the anime and the manga.

For a JRPG game developed by Bandai Namco, That Time I Got Reincarnated As a Slime ISEKAI Chronicles is both simple and familiar to me. The combat gameplay is somehow similar to Tales of Vesperia as it revolves around setting up the proper series of combos and skills to defeat enemies.

Though they are noteworthy, the same cannot be said about the game’s objectives. Most of the time when completing a mission, it requires clearing certain maps multiple times, reaching a rank, or collecting items that are very easy to acquire. Overall, it feels repetitive and needs improvement.

The visual aspect of the game is good. However, it feels like playing an older generation of the consoles as most of the background feels copy pasted. It would have been nice for them to add more details and put notable areas that fans of the series would instantly recognize. If they had done that, it would have been a huge prop for Isekai fans such as myself. Also, it would have been best for the developers to add more depth to the background of the game. Doing so will give a sense that this game is worth getting for next-generation consoles.

The audio for the game is good as the voice acting performance of the characters is fully developed. With original and new voice lines in the game, I love how committed the anime team was to making sure this game would deliver. Plus, I love that they mostly used the anime’s OST theme to make it nostalgic.

Themes like “To You Within Me”, “Reimei”, and more were fun to hear and I want to download them on my Spotify app. But what surprised me is that they added another original opening song just for the game and it was made by Miho Karasawa who is known for anime songs like Maria the Virgin Witch, Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans, and especially the ending of That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime.

Is it worth buying the game? Not really. For me, buying the game for $49.99 is pricey. As much as this game wants to promote its hype to the anime, I felt like its lack of appeal and game content led to its downfall. If I were to rate it, I would say that this game should best be bought at around half the price or even lower as it has so many repetitive missions and only targets a specific audience to get this game.

That Time I Got Reincarnated As a Slime ISEKAI Chronicles is ok but like I said, it is worth getting if the price is cheaper as this game is intended to target those who are fans of the series. My only opinion is that they should make this game more livid and more compelling as many parts are too repetitive. Finally, the difficulty of the game feels non-existent as there is only normal mode or story mode.
