Phil Spencer: Xbox Exclusives “Don’t Work For Us”

The Microsoft Gaming CEO has reiterated that keeping its first-party games exclusive isn’t a profitable business strategy. As spotted by VGC, Phil Spencer told Destin Legarie in an interview that the company’s strategy is to make games “available”.

“Game Pass is an important component of playing the games on our platform,” Spencer told Destin. “To keep games off of other platforms, that’s not a path for us, it doesn’t work for us.”

Phil Spencer always has believed that game exclusives prevent players from experiencing amazing titles. He’s been an advocate for having games available on other platforms, not just exclusively for Xbox. That’s true, especially with the announcement of id Software’s DOOM: The Dark Ages. The highly-anticipated prequel of DOOM (2016) is also coming to PS5.

Although the franchise has always been multi-platform, the Bethesda acquisition led many to believe that future games might be exclusive to Xbox, strengthening its first-party line-up.

Xbox first-party titles have already made their way to the blue side such as Sea of Thieves and Hi-Fi Rush. It’s no longer a surprise that Microsoft might be going for multi-platform, which leaves an important question: how long will Microsoft support the Xbox hardware?
